Adverse Living Conditions
This is not Venice in Italy, but in the Macabalan district of Cagayan de Oro, in the Philippines. There are several canals here in the city as well. People live particularly close to the canal here in Macabalan.
The high water at high tide pushes into the canal of this peninsula, which flows into the Cagayan River on the other side. Walls have been built along the edges of the canal to protect the adjacent houses from the water. Unfortunately, these walls are not watertight in all places, but the water seeps through and floods the footpaths along the canal.
Barangay Macabalan is the port area of Cagayan de Oro and one of the most densely populated areas of the city. I was there to find the same path again after 11 years and to create a new video about the warm people there.
