Many of the vehicles used in the Philippines are getting on in years. Not all of them were new vehicles from the beginning, quite a few were imported a few years ago as so-called 'chop-chop' vehicles, as scrap and then finely and neatly welded back together in workshops. The Starex of the Hiyundai car brand are particularly worthy of mention here. Others are assembled from a wide variety of used car parts and put on the market as multicabs.

Often an engine or gearbox gives up. These are not scrapped in the Philippines, but most of these parts are overhauled and made ready for use again.

This is where the Philippine 'Machine Shops' come into play.

I visited one of these machine shops in Barangay Gusa, in the city of Cagayan de Oro, and photographed and filmed the owners and workers at work.

Most of the machines are new and imported from Taiwan or China.
