I like to walk along the residential streets in the barangays and get into conversation with the people there. Today I am in the very densely populated Barangay Macabalan. This barangay is surrounded by water on three sides and is also the port area of the city of Cagayan de Oro. On the western side is the Cagayan River with its estuary, to the north is the access to the Bohol Sea via Macajalar Bay and on the eastern side are the port facilities.
Most of the people who live here are certainly not among the city’s bedded-on roses, and yet everywhere you go you get a smile and hear happy laughter. This is also the case here, at one of the houses directly on the waterfront. Once upon a time, the well was still on the land. Since the new coastal road was built, for some reason the well is now in the water. But that doesn’t stop the local children from splashing around and swimming.
